Marcie Brewer was born in Peoria, IL and is the daughter of Jane and Allen Brewer. She is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation whose artistic dreaming began through the gift of a camera and falling in love with the light. As a conceptual artist her works center around ideas while engaging materials optimal in creating layers of meanings. She researches Cherokee culture rooted in visual theories and oral histories while continuing to learn to speak, read, and write Tsalagi (Cherokee) language. She studied Anthropology, Linguistics and Photography at Southern Illinois University Carbondale as well as earning a MFA in Art Sudio from The University of New Mexico. She is currently teaching and working towards completing a MA in Native American Studies at The University of Oklahoma.
